MASJIDUL ARIF

Redefining the Mosque as a Community Space

Modern Mosque Design Kerala | Masjidul Arif

Masjidul Arif is located in Kondotty, Malappuram. From the beginning, the idea was not to treat it only as a place for prayer, but as a space that people can also use to come together. It works both as a mosque and as a community space, which shaped many of the design decisions.

Project Details

Project Name: Masjidul Arif
Area: 2686 sqft
Plot Area: 36 cent
Type: Religious
Location: Kondotty, Malappuram, Kerala
Completion Year: 2025

The site is not very large, so the corner was used to open up the building. This helps the entry feel more visible and easy to approach, instead of being closed off.

The curved brick wall is one of the main elements in the project. It is not just for how it looks — it also helps reduce outside noise and control heat. The jali brickwork cuts direct sunlight, and at the same time, the small openings allow air to pass through. Because of this, the inside stays cooler without depending too much on mechanical systems.

Materials are kept simple on purpose. Exposed brick, basic textures, and natural finishes give a quiet and calm feeling inside. Some landscape is brought close to the building so that the space doesn’t feel hard or rigid.

The dome above is kept minimal. It allows light to come in from the top and opens the space visually, but it is not made too dominant. It just sits as part of the whole experience.

The open area in front is also planned to be flexible. During prayer time it works for parking, and at other times it can be used for gatherings.

Masjidul Arif is a simple and practical response to the idea of a modern mosque design Kerala, where climate, use, and everyday life are all considered together.
