This family is settled in the USA. Therefore, they wanted to implement a colonial style house in Kerala reflecting their lifestyle here, and they approached us with this requirement. So, this is a colonial-type house. However, creating an exact replica of a colonial house presents challenges due to our country’s weather conditions. We carefully resolved issues such as strong wind and the need for proper shading in a way that matches the local climate.
Client: Mr Fahis
Project: 5th Avenue
Type: Private Residence (Colonial style house)
Area: sqft:2073 sqft
Plot Area: 16 Cent
Location: Tharayittal, Kondotty, Malappuram, Kerala
The focal point of the house is the light well connected to the courtyard, which brings pleasant natural light into the interiors. Since this is a colonial type, the roof follows the correct slope proportions and uses shingles as the primary material. In addition, we introduced adequate shading elements. Light limestone cladding complements the design, while pastel colours enhance the overall character.
Privacy was also important to the client because neighbouring houses surround the site. Therefore, we designed a patio connected to the dining hall and attached the carport to it. We also introduced louvers to maintain privacy without affecting ventilation.
The interior follows a minimal colonial theme. We planned the spaces to ensure proper circulation along with maximum light and ventilation. Similarly, we designed the landscape so that it can be enjoyed from all interior areas. The house has two entrances: one through the patio connected to the carport and the main sit-out facing the front façade. The pedestrian entry faces this sit-out. We designed the sit-out ceiling using wooden finishes with oak wood textures to match the colonial character.
We designed a gazebo as part of the landscape to create a relaxing outdoor space. Along with it, we introduced a water cascade and a water body to enhance the overall experience. Since the client lives abroad, we selected tropical plants to keep maintenance simple and easy to manage.
